Sometimes cocktail bars are described as quirky - but there's slightly unconventional, and then there's downright and hilariously kooky like Foundation Bar. In the heart of Covent Garden this bar and restaurant is the perfect place for a night of drinking or feasting, or indeed both. The bar has a large open space with cow-hide booths, leading off to secluded areas for drinks under fairy-lights. The restaurant is a whole other story, featuring lego tables and themed areas. I'd definitely recommend checking out their online gallery.
When you open a cocktail menu and it makes you laugh your head off, you know it's going to be a good night. Highlights include The Bitch Slap, Bubblegum Mojito, and The Selfie which comes with a polaroid photo that the waitress takes of you. I tried the Jaffa Cake (above), a creamy mix of vanilla Absolut, Baileys, and marmalade. It comes in a milk bottle with two jaffa cakes, hee hee! Eccentrically served drinks are the norm here: they come in teapots, jam jars, tin cans, and with amusing side servings. The Downton Abbey comes on a fancy tray with cheese and crackers!
I think I should just explain that it's quite dark and red in the bar - hence my photos not being crystal. Sorry about that. Eating in the bar is fine (though loud), and they have a separate bar menu should you not want full on food. Of course the pizza would come in a takeaway box, you weren't expecting it on a plate, were you? And the menus are all vinyl records and LP covers - trip down music memory lane, anyone? I have to say, the macaroni cheese is one of the best I've ever tried, and that's not the Bitch Slap talking.
Dessert was salted-caramel shortbread sundae. Oh hai sweet-treat perfection! It was shared and we had some left over that we just couldn't manage. Turns out, creamy cocktails are quite filling. The staff at Foundation Bar are an absolute delight! We almost double-took when the door man beamed hello at us; London bar security are usually less... well-mannered you could say. Our waitress was so much fun, she asked our names and used them all night (what a pro!) and she had great recommendations for us. There are fantastic events and party nights at Foundation, but it's also a fun place to go for yummy food and certified quirky drinks with friends. Perfect location, venue, menu and staff - it's an Eat Drink London win!
Foundation Bar invited me for a complimentary meal, but everything I said is true. A sour-faced Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey face at you if you don't believe me x
